SOLO arquitetos has designed a weekend house in alvorada do sul, positioned right next to the paranapanema river in southern brazil. the design of the ‘lake house’ adapts to the geography of the site and makes the most of the beautiful views over the river and wetlands. the project explores the relationship between the built and natural environment by moulding the architectural intervention to the topography of the location, resulting in a form that acts as a belevdere to enjoy the surroundings.

the architect has divided the entire massing of the building into two rectangular blocks – denoting private and social functions respectively. the volumes are positioned to be slightly mis-aligned, to create movement and independence between the two. the first, is closer to the entrance of the site, facilitating quick access and privacy for three bedrooms. the highlight is the main suite, which looks over the property and the river. a large opening in front of the bed frames the views, providing the owners with a picture-perfect scene.

the social volume protrudes farther into the site, reaching the pool and the generous back garden, connecting inside and outside through an elevated wooden deck. this block works as a pavilion, comprising of living, dining and kitchen areas. the open plan allows not only a dynamic use of these spaces, but also an unhindered view to the river from any point inside.

the main aspect of the lake house is its materiality. the private volume has been finished using stones extracted from the site, adding a beautiful layer of red color that is typical to the region. moreover, the social volume has a particular history: it was built using bricks from an old factory owned by the family, which were carefully disassembled to build their new holiday house. this upcycling not only provides an aspect of sustainability, but also a personal touch to the family home.SOLO arquitetos upcycles materials to form the lake house in southern brazil designboom
