SOM and transystems reveal the initial designs for the revitalization one of the oldest and busiest train stations in the heart of chicago. ‘state/lake elevated station’ will function as a cultural hub and gateway to downtown for citizens and visitors as is located at a vital junction serving for six of locals’ eight train lines, with further connections to pedestrian and bus routes. apart from improving accessibility, safety, and comfort, the architects sought to integrate historic materials from the existing station into the design to provide harmony between past and future, while the transparent structure brings plenty of natural light within.SOM and transystems bring new vitality to one of chicago's oldest train stationsall images courtesy of SOM

 

 

SOM and transystems are working closely with chicago department of transportation (CDOT), chicago transit authority (CTA) and the city of chicago, engaging stakeholders and consulting with the community throughout the design process. the project involves wider safer platforms, a sweeping glass canopy, a new accessible fly-over connection bridge, new elevators for riders of all mobilities to the elevated and red line platforms, and public realm enhancements at street level. it also includes street-level lighting upgrades, wider street corners, an improved pedestrian crossing, and an accessible connection to the plaza to the north.SOM and transystems bring new vitality to one of chicago's oldest train stations

 

 

meanwhile, the glass canopy with a bird-friendly frit pattern provides shading in the summer and protection from winds in the winter while allowing ample daylight into the station. the transparency and lightness of the structure draw from chicago’s history of structural innovation while minimizing obstructions to provide expanded views towards the theatre marquee, historical buildings, and architectural landmarks along the state street corridor. furthermore, a new glass and metal-clad bridge on the western end of the station will connect to new elevators and stairs for fully accessible circulation from street to platform.SOM and transystems bring new vitality to one of chicago's oldest train stations
