japanese practice SPEAC inc has designed ‘fukuoka residence’, a multi-unit apartment building in fukuoka, japan. skewed and angular in its form, the structure responds to shadow restrictions and regulations that often limit the height, shape and placement of towers. positioned at the southernmost edge of the site, angled away from the sun, the apartment features a strategically composed typology which allows it to stand tall above the surrounding environment without casting unwanted shadows onto the neighboring structures.

fourteen individual units measuring fifty square meters each, are dispersed over eight floors, arranged to provide three-sided views outwards. varying in layout and orientation, the dwellings feature high ceilings and large windows that introduce natural light and ventilation into the compact private homes.
