a greenhouse-style starbucks opening next month in western tokyo will use a combination of light and sound to display digital flora all year round. opening to coincide with cherry blossom season, the café is also decorated with rows of flower beds and an abundance of real plants including begonia, fuchsia, petunia, geranium and bellflower.

covering a total length of 60 metres, the branch uses 20 projectors and 18 speakers to create the spectacle. four to six times a day the café will go dark and the digital flora and fauna will be projected across the space creating an immersive audio-visual experience.

set across 16,146 square foot, the branch will open on march 14 at the new hana biyori greenhouse that is run by yomiuriland, one of tokyo’s most popular amusement parks. on the southern terrace are beautiful flower fields, while the western terrace offers a glimpse of the nearby japanese garden with its two imposing bodhisattva statues and a 17th-century pagoda. also on site, is the hijirimon gate which was once part of the kyoto imperial palace.

there are also two large aquariums housing a total fo 1,200 colorful fish spanning 50 species. a 26-foot tank is filled with colourful corals and saltwater fish from okinawa while a 9.8-foot tank one is filled with rock formations and greenery. there will also be an otter enclosure and a rotation of workshops when the greenhouse opens.
