STARSIS + ilsang workroom build an idyllic guesthouse on jeju island in south korea

in collaboration with ilsang workroom, STARSIS has designed ‘draindot’ guesthouse on a site in the south korean island, jeju. developed together with the client, who had previously purchased the plot of land after falling in love with the location during a vacation, the concept behind the project focuses on creating a relaxing place for families to stay, while forming a building that quietly blends into the landscape.

the project is planned by STARSIS and ilsang workroom in two separate volumes. the first is a long, single-storey block with a flat roof that can be accessed via an external staircase. the second is a two storey volume with a pitched roof. characterized by the white exterior punctuated by picture-frame windows, the buildings form a clean, simple aesthetic on the island’s landscape.

functioning now as a guesthouse, ‘draindot’ was originally planned as the client’s own home, hence personal touches can be found throughout the spaces. for the interiors, the architects wanted to create different spatial experiences, from voluminous to cozy. by using various objects and configurations, the resulting space is clean, crisp, and relaxing, yet hides many interesting details.

the common space is the first space that guests encounter when walking along the long concrete road. this is where draindot starts. designed to welcome visitors to the guesthouse and as a space to provide breakfast, the design intends to offer a warm, inviting place.
