architect hyunje joo has designed an installation made with 2,000 structural egg trays to restyle the façade of an art gallery within the old town of tae-back in gangwon-do, south korea. seeking to provide a new perspective on everyday objects, the flexible architectural element highlights the difference between the old and new surface of the building, while the embedded lighting provides visitors with further interesting visuals at nighttime.

this new temporary façade by hyunje joo presents a neat arrangement of 2,000 structural egg trays, made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE). for this project, the egg trays were also UV coated to ensure the durability of the structure. the resulting piece emerges as a simple, lightweight addition to the existing front of the gallery, with a steel subframe connecting all the individual egg trays together, using steel cable ties.

the small slits between the egg trays allow the light to shine through, stimulating the visitors’ senses and making the passage of time actively sensed. ‘the project is not about the ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ ways of using objects, but rather about highlighting their affordances or meanings’ hyunje joo shares. the intent is to create an economical, flexible, light, and recyclable flexible element. in fact, the designer intends to reuse every individual egg tray upon dismantling the installation.
