architecture firm, studio 17, completed the extension and refurbishment of a residence in lechelles, switzerland. the house addition is simple, yet sophisticated; the consisting elements are visible and can be simplified to three main parts: a concrete base, a continuous glass layer and a light roof supported by slender galvanized columns. each of the elements has its proper logic, at first modeling the surrounding, then adapting to the existing house.

the architects’ minimal expression of the construction is reduced, avoiding any superfluous expressive elements. it is therefore very simple in appearance, without losing its delicacy and radical approach. the resulting inner space is a multipurpose living room in continuity between the house and the garden, largely benefitting of the surprising and open landscape.

the limited material and color palette match the freshness of the new space. the aluminum columns contrast with the interior light wooden flooring and door frame. white surfaces cover the rest of the addition, making it a pleasing sun-lit and airy open room. studio 17 skilfully blends the modern extension to the traditional swiss house, resulting in a small yet refreshing project.
