studio 5•5 redesigns centre pompidou's bookshop with mobile furniture

as its retail outlets reopen, centre pompidou in paris, is inaugurating a bookshop on level 6, entirely revitalized by studio 5•5. the challenge was to design a new, attractive point of sale, retaining a certain degree of modularity, easy to adapt to the various exhibitions, and even freed up for one-off events. the designers have created mobile furniture, a re-imagination of art transport trolleys, thus generating a modular space that echoes the architecture and the four colors of the building.all images courtesy of studio 5•5

suggested by RMN – grand palais, centre pompidou selected studio 5•5 to redesign the layout of the bookshop and create a ’boutique’ where the functions are the focus of the project. the exhibition bookshop strategically was positioned at the exit of galleries 1 and 2 on level 6 reached by elevator. the new piece of furniture highlights the variety of books and products while presenting a rich bibliography around exhibitions.

in line with the centre pompidou’s commitment to ecological responsibility, the project has been planned with the environment in mind. on the one hand, the modular design of the elements helps to optimize the manufacturing process and reduce the impact of transport. on the other hand, the components have been selected utilizing dimensions that allow the use of raw material panels in their entirety, eliminating offcuts.

as the different elements and materials of the furniture are self-contained, the space can be rearranged and evolve without physical anchorage to the building. the light design aims to the core of its functionality so that this new space endures over time and can develop side by side with the building as required. the whole space can easily be moved and reinstalled during future work on the centre.
