studio asri was tasked by the bakery’s owner himself, to create the interiors for his restaurant with an ‘artisan’ theme. located in ubud, bali, monsieur spoon was designed with a tropical approach starting with the material palette. the architects chose to clad the floor and walls with exposed concrete, a raw and natural look, and combined it with warm wood elements. minimal fabrication material was used, to keep the artisan theme prominent.
the designers divided the room into three parts based on their functions. the front part hosts a wide seating area with a view of the main road. the middle area includes the counter display and the dining room, while the back area serves as a semi-open dining room with a garden, ideal for the tropical climate.
inspired by the bakery’s name, the designers adopted the ‘spoon’ identity as an architectural ornament. they created wall panels with a teaspoon shape varying in sizes and color gradient to create a dynamic wall piece. another spoon application were the ceiling panels holding small spoons arranged in a herringbone pattern. besides applying to walls and ceilings, spoons were also used as smaller decorative elements such as door handles and glass shaped like spoon on the wooden doors.
on the front facade, tropical elements were added, such as pergolas covered with bamboo and vines, to respond to ubud’s natural environment. the pergola also reduces the excess solar heat during the day so customers can still be comfortable dining under it. due to its open nature, the surrounding landscape was maintained: covered in fine grass and stone footing added as a circulation area.
the back area patio used for the outdoor dining room has a garden atmosphere, tying back to the surrounding nature. this space can also be used for recreational activities – such as bread making classes for kids. the incandescent lights strung on the pergola create a soothing lighting effect at night, adding a relaxing atmosphere in the back garden and a pleasant evening dining experience.
