studio pei zhu has revealed plans for a museum in jiangxi, china, which celebrates the region’s famed pottery industry. referred to as the ‘porcelain capital’, the city of jingdezhen came to prosperity as a result of its china production. the site for the new institution is situated besides clusters of workshops that date back to the ming and qing dynasties.

studio pei zhu’s design is an abstract representation of the traditional kiln — the apparatus used to create pottery for centuries. intended to appear as a handcrafted form, the building is restrained in scale, and seeks to activate the surrounding environment. known as the ‘jingdezhen historical museum of imperial kiln’, the structure is partially positioned underground, with vaults that include unearthed relics.

internally, visitors are guided into kilns, ruins, and, subsequently, the traditions and culture of jingdezhen’s history. the building’s simple and primitive form encourages guests to engage with the site, the museum, and its wider context. the design also pays homage to the region’s location at the start of the maritime silk road, with arched structures that resemble the sails of boats. the museum starts construction in 2016, with completion slated for the following year.
