facing a noisy and crowded street in haruyoshi, adjacent to the downtown area of the fukuoka sandbank, studio tands has built ‘gion japanese restaurant.’ in response, the design serves as a place of tranquility and escape from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding activities. upon entry, customers are given a view of the interior dining room through a horizontal rectilinear window cut into a blue façade. once visitors are inside, an intimate and private ambience is presented through the formal implementation of three stark white volumes housing the food preparation and back of house functions. with smooth filleted corners that help suggest a continuation of space, the blank walls capture shadows that complement to the jet black decorations and wooden furnishings lining the perimeter.
