south korean architecture practice studio_GAON has completed the ‘house for reunion’ or ‘house of happy meeting’ in yeoju, a small city just outside of seoul. located near a religious village, the site itself is out of the way, positioned further along a country road. surrounded by open fields, the structure was built for three generations as a place to bring relatives together. exploring modern notions of what family time means, the architects developed a three-tiered volume to represent the different ages – stacking separate rooms within one mass.
due to legal restrictions the footprint could be no more than 53 square meters, which resulted in a multi-storey dwelling that is both small and large. formed by dividing a long square shape into modular pieces, the rooms are orientated towards the outside, while a deck with a traditional overhang provides a relaxing space to enjoy the company of others.
