austrian practice synn architekten has completed ‘junges wohnen am nordbahnhof’, a residential apartment block for youth near the north train station located in vienna, austria. housing for young people must meet three conditions: it must be affordable, respond flexibly to changing situations and offer generous interior and exterior spaces for communication. small and economic units referred to as ‘mini-lofts’ offer one or two room plan arrangements with a central room for spatial separation.

common areas on successive levels provide opportunities for communal gathering and planting of floating gardens. the building itself is lifted above the service facilities on the ground floor to generate a covered open space allowing permeate entry from the surrounding urban context.
