located in the latvian city of jūrmala is the ‘kado karim’ apartment complex by architects SZK and partners. the project consists of three freestanding buildings titled ‘maison de mer’, ‘maison de parc’, and ‘maison de karim’ — the latter of which was developed by american designer karim rashid. the three structures are combined with a recessed courtyard entrance, which leads to a common lobby and underground parking for 47 vehicles.

‘kado karim’ is composed of 14 apartments with 3-4 bedrooms in each. in addition, there are seven double-height penthouses with areas ranging between 200-240m2. ground floor owners have access to garden terraces, those above them have balconies, and penthouse inhabitants have exclusive access to roof terraces.

the flowing spatial forms of the structures are derived from the seaside — the complex is located close to the baltic sea shore. smoothed pebbles and drift wood are direct muses, with the addition of other features like wave-esque courtyard benches and white exteriors evocative of sunlit resorts. the organic buildings also accommodate the owners’ privacy, as windows are not directly opposing others. interiors — besides the work of rashid — were designed by SZK and partners, mareks birznieks, and karina & ulvis abiķi of neoklasika
