ALTS design office has created the ‘terasho house‘ in japan that brings nature indoors. the project creates an internal landscape that makes the users aware of the external natural environment wherever they are in in the home. the client, a plaster craftsman, was involved in the design at each stage to decide on interior finishes and textures, resulting in a warm and intimate atmosphere.

the design by ALTS intends to develop an outdoor-like space within the building, that smoothly transitions to the rural scenery north of the land. the aim of the entire project is to create a relieving and calming atmosphere. a small quasi-internal courtyard in incorporated at the entrance which nicely links the interior and exterior. a japanese style room sits adjacent to this garden area and connects to the outside by a large window.

the kitchen is located in the center of the main living area and again uses huge glazed panels to bring in daylight and views of the surroundings. the large window is about 6 meters long and can be opened fully for direct access to the outdoors. the interior is characterized by natural timber and elements of blackened wood, which together create a very intimate feeling. overall, the terasho house by ALTS creates a very personal space that evokes a warm, comfortable atmosphere.
