in june 2014, tesla broke ground on its ‘gigafactory’ — an enormous production facility, which, once complete in 2020, will have the largest footprint of any building in the world. as the structure continues to grow on a vast plot of land near reno, nevada, videography and photography agency above reno has captured stunning aerial footage of the development. see the 4K video in full below.

the building will help tesla meet its increasing production requirements as more and more lithium ion batteries are needed for its vehicles. cell production at the new plant is expected to begin in 2017, coinciding with the launch of the model 3 car. by 2020 the gigafactory will produce more batteries annually than were produced worldwide during the entire calendar year of 2013.

in cooperation with panasonic and other partners, the facility aims to produce batteries for significantly less cost. ‘we expect to drive down the per kilowatt hour (kWh) cost of our battery pack by more than 30 percent,’ explains tesla. ‘the gigafactory will also be powered by renewable energy sources, with the goal of achieving net zero energy.’

an array of photovoltaic panels will be added to the roof at a later date, with many areas of the existing building ready for further expansion. the area of land surrounding the factory itself will also be heavily developed, providing the necessary infrastructure to support tesla’s activities and that of its employees.

  • Really the worlds largest building? Or only under certain restrictions like “built in one go”, floor area under one roof…? Some fair halls or car producers might be same or bigger.
