will reopen for the general public on 18 february 2006. on a bright day, it already surprises visitors with its new, shining outer skin. the interior renovation will be ready for the official reopening ceremony on 14 february 2006. ASBL atomium invited german lighting designer ingo maurer to light this extraordinary architecture. most of the nine spheres with a diameter of 18 meters are divided into several levels. they are connected by tubes 3.3 meters wide and 23 meters long which contain stairs or elevators. ingo and his team projected two large scale lighting objects and the installation of several pieces of two newly developed designs. images of space stations, UFOs and life in space, influenced by movies, were incorporated in a playful way.
