the multi-generational tile house resonates with its climate

Tile House, aptly named for its distinct tile-based design, confronts the climatic challenges of its natural and urban surroundings. Realized by The Bloom Architects in Bao Loc, Vietnam, the project sought to tackle the adversities of a particular climate where long, dry, sunny days yield to relentless bouts of rainfall. In such harsh conditions, corrugated iron shelters seemed to be the norm. However, the prevailing pleasant and cool air throughout the year posed a question: ‘How well would this house resonate with the climate?’ The Tile House responds in its sensory design, conceived to foster togetherness for a multi-generational family.

Harnessing the refreshing local breeze, the residence employs tile as a conduit to usher cool air in and regulate air flow. A large ‘light-wind hole’ punctuates the heart of the structure, coupled with bright, wind-friendly slots encircling the house which filters natural light and winds into each corner of the space.

Tile House is inhabited by a tight-knit family spanning generations. Tile, the chosen material for their home, not only adapts seamlessly to the capricious weather but also evokes a sense of nostalgia known only to the elders within the home. As such, The Bloom Architects has employed tile in versatile applications, from a roof and wall, to a protective shield, and a slot for fresh air to permeate the home. Complementing this, the architects segment the house with two-layered soundproof and heat-insulating walls, ensuring privacy within each room and from surrounding neighbors.
