heatherwick studio reveals lobby design for 'lantern house' residences in new york

heatherwick studio, the london-based firm founded by thomas heatherwick, has shared the first images of the lobby it has designed for ‘lantern house’ — the new york residential project currently under construction at 515 west 18th street. previously featured on designboom here, the project is named for its interpretation of the modern bay window and builds on heatherwick’s other projects in the city, including ‘vessel’ at hudson yards and ‘little island’ at pier 55.

situated directly below the high line and flanked by magnolia trees, the freestanding glass lobby pavilion connects lantern house’s two buildings, which are located on both sides of the elevated park. ‘as the high line’s amazing riveted steel structure goes straight through the middle of our site, we knew we mustn’t miss the chance to borrow all its texture and character to make an idiosyncratic arrival experience for the building’s residents,’ explains thomas heatherwick.

the 1,900-square foot pavilion features a stepped glass wall, which will offer unobstructed views, a maximum amount of natural light, and a fluid transition from the street to the building. meanwhile, the pavilion’s sweeping eves integrate the high line’s historic beams as a focal point. ‘to not compete with the soulful materiality of this historic piece of infrastructure, we designed a lobby that barely touches it and is slung from the east building to the west, with a roof structure that gently drapes, like a piece of textile,’ heatherwick continues.

inside, the pavilion is anchored by a reception desk handmade from cast glass and bronze metal finishes. elsewhere, the lobby includes a sitting area which features select furniture pieces from studio van den akker along with chevron eramosa marble flooring that contrasts the ceiling. the project’s developer, related companies, has launched a website for the project ahead of the official sales launch in early 2020.
