new images have been unveiled of the heatherwick studio-designed residential building, currently under construction at 515 west 18th street in new york. the project, which was first unveiled in early 2018, also has a new title — ‘lantern house’ — named for its interpretation of the modern bay window. the development builds on heatherwick studio’s other work in manhattan, including ‘vessel’ at hudson yards and pier55, which together hope to create a sculptural corridor along the city’s far west side. sales for the project are set to launch in january 2020, with occupancy anticipated in the autumn of the same year.

heatherwick studio’s design responds to the neighborhood’s maritime warehouses and pairs grey brickwork with industrial metal detailing. lantern house’s two towers, one 10-stories and the other 21-stories, are connected by a sculptural glass lobby beneath the high line. meanwhile, the bay windows not only maximize light and views but also lend the scheme a distinctive character. internally, window seats offer encompassing views of the hudson river, the city skyline, and beyond.

‘lantern house is the studio’s first residential project in new york, so we’re excited for people to now see it turning into reality,’ says thomas heatherwick, founder of heatherwick studio. ‘the design came from looking at the city’s existing buildings and thinking about which ones you might want to live in, not just look at. it seemed to us that practical, crafted, human-scale details such as shades, mullions, and window sills might have a role to play again in making homes feel comfortable and inviting.’
