Atelier Zeros Blends Algorithmic Design and Traditional Artistry

Atelier Zeros’ design for the ZHANGYU Gallery at CITIC Pacific Plaza in Shanghai fuses computational algorithms with the traditional artistry of Zhang Yu’s ink paintings. The installation contrasts algorithm-driven processes with hand-drawn works, creating an immersive, dreamlike, space that stands out in a commercial setting. Located on the third floor of the mall, the gallery offers a quieter environment for office workers and art enthusiasts. The entrance design, constructed from over 1,000 pieces of 1.5mm colorful galvanized steel, evokes the burst of rice paper, reflecting the dynamic strokes in Zhang Yu’s paintings. Prefabricated off-site for quick assembly without welding, the entrance merges form and function. The use of colorful steel creates a striking visual impact in the otherwise uniform mall environment. The gallery’s seamless white interior is inspired by the concept of blank space, echoing elements from Zhang Yu’s works and enhancing the immersive, meditative quality of the space.

multicolor installation in ZHANGYU Gallery unfolds like wings

Inside, the space is tailored to visitors who connect with the artwork through strong emotional responses. The gallery design facilitates this connection by providing an atmosphere that invites exploration, reflection, and engagement with art. Atelier Zeros’ architectural approach balances aesthetics and practicality, incorporating necessary fire safety features while maintaining design integrity. Customization through CNC cutting and hot-dip galvanization, where steel is immersed in a zinc bath to form a protective coating, ensures both precision and durability, aligning with the artist’s vision. This project showcases the potential of computational design and prefabrication in creating a bespoke gallery experience, enhancing the interaction between visitors and the artwork. The installation ultimately transforms a commercial setting into a space of reflection and artistic immersion.
