+tongtong reinvents eclectic drake devonshire inn by lake ontario

toronto-based design studio +tongtong has converted a former foundry into a brand new boutique hotel situated right on the waterfront by lake ontario, wellington. the revitalized drake devonshire inn perches over a meandering creek providing guests with breathtaking views of crystal clear waters on one side and the forest on the other. the design approach draws inspiration from summer camps, the historical background and references southern ontario’s farmhouses and cottages. meanwhile parts of the original heritage is respected- illustrated in the original brickwork around the site- contemporary touches are added into the mix, resulting in a unique and comfortable retreat away from the city.

internally, the diverse combination of areas makes for a enjoyable experience for families, couple and children. with 11-rooms and two-suites, each space has been carefully decorated in an eclectic manner, with a mix-match of furnishings, playful patterns and materials- translating a lighthearted and sophisticated ambience. architecturally, elements of the of classic country house is highlighted with a outdoor barn-like pavilion for picnics, whereas the large bar reflects a country general store. the luxury suite, shaped like an A-framed cabin, captures panoramic views of the lake during the day simultaneously a private deck is available to sit beneath the stars at night. with a sister hotel in toronto, the reinvented drake devonshire inn balances old with new elements, providing visitors with a getaway to the natural canadian landscape.
