on a hillside near tbilisi, in georgia, architects irakli abashidze and dimitri shapakidze of laboratory of architecture #3 have designed a distinctive geometric residence, divided into an arrangement of triangular forms. the main objective of the project was to deal with the complex topography of the area, without forming large retaining walls, so that the terrain is not distorted and the house is organically embedded into it. the geometric triangulation of the volumes was conceived as a solution thus generating a more compliant yet dynamic structure, showcasing brutalist aesthetics.

adopting a similar look to the surrounding rocky outcrops, the residence by laboratory of architecture #3 is composed of lightly colored concrete which gives warmth to the overall brutalist aesthetics. ‘as in the famous fable about the elephant and the blind men, this house has different shapes in different places,’ irakli abashidze and dimitri shapakidze share. ‘some places are thin and resemble a trampoline, some places are spread out like a meadow’. thanks to its geometric configuration, and its various triangular formations, the project perfectly matches the wishes of clients to merge and synthesize all possibilities given by the terrain, finding a golden intersection between all achievable architectural decisions.
