tropical space adds multipurpose wooden box for children in the center of this vietnam house

tropical space has inserted a sculptural wooden box in the center of this 68 sqm apartment in vietnam that serves as a multipurpose space for children. titled ‘happy box’, the structure comprises a series of spaces connected both vertically and horizontally so multiple activities can take place at the same time. the box is rotated 45 degrees within the space to create open angles, so that the room can feel larger and sunlight can enter deeper into the interior, where the kitchen and toilet are located.all images by trieu chien

‘have you ever thought when a kid comes and asks for a design of a house, what would be his/her requirements?’ asks tropical space. ‘they may want a house like a playground, so they can be free to run around. put aside all the practical demands that the adults would focus on, they would like to maximize the space so they can play and do everything they want. some may want to have as much as windows, so they can immerse themselves in the little stars and the night sky.’

the sculptural wooden box integrates a bunk bed for the two kids, working and studying areas, as well as shelving units within 3 x 3 meters and a 2.2-meter height. all spaces inside it are connected both vertically and horizontally so that multiple activities can take place at the same time. inserted in the center of the 68 sqm apartment and rotated by 45 degrees, the structure allows natural light to pass through it and further inside the house.

the rest of the space – an unfinished apartment that was almost empty – is kept in its existing state, with bare concrete ceilings that maximize the height of the interior. besides the wooden box in the center, the project includes a kitchen, toilet and storage space, neatly designed with all needed functions. ‘we want air volumes of apartments in tropical climate areas to be ventilated, not being closed, and have a chance to use the natural environment energy,’ says tropical space. ‘more importantly, the smile and happiness always overflow in the happy boxes.’
