designed by architecture firm turnbull griffin haesloop, ‘hupomone ranch’ is an original 160-acre homestead located west of the small californian town of petaluma. the ranch was fallow for more than 30 years before the owners, a young family with three children, decided to construct a new house that would draw on the natural serenity of the site. the client also wished for a building that reflected a commitment to sustainable farming in a location where ranching is still a daily part of people’s lives.

turnbull griffin haesloop positioned the barn to complement the region’s natural terrain and capture the long views towards the nearby coastal range. in addition to the main residence, the property also includes a separate poolhouse located directly opposite the barn. the home is entered via a sheltered porch that leads directly into the main living space. here, the light-filled lounge connects the bedrooms and a kitchen, which features slide away windows that open directly to the garden.

completed by erin martin, the dwelling’s interiors have been specifically designed to enhance the relationship between indoor and outdoor space. the owners have also built a number of tables and benches, and are in the process of building their own dining room table. landscaping by lutsko associates includes several outdoor living areas, organized along a riparian restoration and native plantings.

the house is certified LEED platinum and features a number of energy saving features. passive heating and cooling with thermal mass and insulation, geothermal, radiant cooling and heating — along with solar and photovoltaic panels — all contribute to the house’s overall energy efficiency.
