tokyo based practice tyrant kunihiko matsuba + n-llc has completed the ‘hirozakari sake brewery’ located in nakanojo, japan. a series of existing buildings previously used as a brewery were retrofitted to accommodate the nakanojo biennale and display bird hunting drums which were historically produced in the area. the steel structure office building, stone storage room and wooden framed warehouse were preserved while ancillary constructions were demolished to provide spacious circulation throughout the site.

the exhibit is viewed from an interior open air passage bordered with floor to ceiling glass walls to protect artifacts from weather and fluctuating temperatures. the adjacent warehouse contains a tilted concrete floor providing an open room best suited for studios to create art in an imaginative and uninhibited manner. a washroom partially concealed by a cylindrical smoke stack is playfully distorted with a curved mirror. vegetation throughout the complex provides a pleasant atmosphere within the complex while also minimizing heat radiation from the ground. embedded within the grass are fifty LED lights which softly illuminate pathways at night.
