ulf mejergren architects (UMA) has been commissioned to design a small observation tower for a local scout organization outside of stockholm, sweden. titled ‘trunk tower’, the projects sits in a parcel of land known for its rich fauna and variety of wildlife. the client had something modest in mind for the new intervention that would also include a ‘primitive’ off-grid toilet. after visiting the site and noticing one tall, dead tree and one uprooted tree, the team decided to use these as a basis for the observation tower.

after the client approved of using the existing trees to make the observation tower, the architectural team began to sketch directly onto the stumps with duct tape. the next day they returned with the necessary tools to carve and trim the tree: a hacksaw, bow saw, axe and also a chainsaw. using these tools, they carved stairs to climb the trunk in addition to seats, shelves, hangers and hooks.

at the top of the tower is the observation deck itself, from which users can enjoy an unhindered view of the surrounding landscape after climbing the steps up the tree trunk. the project also includes an outdoor ‘twin toilet’ and a secret ‘beer stash’ next to the observation tower. following the success of the project, ulf mejergren architects are now planning to expand the collection of small structures with a small foot bridge over a stream, an outdoor library and a temporary storage, all carved out from stumps and dead trees of course.
