‘on an urban scale’ by urban fabric

designed by israeli architects havi livne and heli ellul tselniker of urban fabric, ‘on an urban scale’ collapses real space and conceptual mapping onto a single plane. it was created for the bat yam biennale of landscape urbanism 2010.

maps and architectural models are useful tools, but their reduced scale, cold aesthetic, and lack of integration into the spaces that they plan limit their utility and the extent to which they can be understood and appreciated by the average observer.

the project casts the architectural plan of part of bat-yam’s business district onto the real space in a 1:1 ratio. trees are drawn along the street, the partitioning of streets, sidewalks, and parking spaces is marked in paint on the ground, while planned three-dimensional objects like benches, trash cans, and traffic signs are formed from pieces of metal and attached to the walls.
