bread etc has approached V10 to design a ‘secret rooftop bar’ as part of its newly renovated location on nanjing road in shanghai. the design studio has focused on creating one strong gesture, a bar wrapping the whole space. the longest bar in shanghai is made out of recycled traditional chinese wooden doors, which were disassembled and reassembled in an upcycling effort to embrace sustainability values.

chinese based studio V10‘s design aims to create the perfect platform to enjoy the ever changing city skyline, given its key location. a simple architecture brings people up to the rooftop level and insulates the lower floors from the rain. the roof structure becomes a light installation at night.

the steel trusses and metal mesh panels filter light and create an ever changing experience. the interior consists of rough plaster onto which the city shadows are projected and distorted. the raised floor resolves most technical aspects of the project, including the acoustics. the balustrade with its integrated light, frames the rooftop and attracts people from the surrounding towers.

the smallness and intimacy of this project are really precious to V10. the studio is always interested in the process of design, the making of its parts and the relationships it generates.
