divided into two wings and separated by a long entrance path, the interior spaces of this house by jerry veverka of san francisco firm veverka architects, are easily connected to its surrounding landscape. designed for the architect himself and his wife, the home is located in el cerrito city, part of the san francisco area – the site has extensive views out to the water from its front, and looks onto the mira vista golf club from the back. a 50 foot uninterrupted art wall extends through the building, displaying paintings and drawings. the long entrance corridor acts as a connecting pathway for the two wings on either side and flows directly out to the exterior terrace beyond. the left side contains a two car garage, studio/guest bedroom and guest bathroom, joined by the colorful courtyard is another studio. the right wing consists of living/dining/kitchen areas as well as an open bedroom and covered porch overlooking the bay. key imperatives for the design were for all the living spaces to have direct access to the outside and for the house to be filled with light. the exterior landscaping is in contrast to the white surfaces throughout the house – the gravel used for the courtyard’s ground is stark and simple, while the orange colored plaster stands out. rocks collected on site were used to form walls and steps and have been integrated into the landscape design.
