historic Jardin Majorelle villa in Marrakesh hits the market

Set right in the heart of Marrakesh, Morocco, the iconic Jardin Majorelle villa is up for sale via Sotheby’s with a price upon request. Designed for painter Jacques Majorelle in the 1930s, and once owned by French designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé, the modernist retreat serves as a symbol in the ‘Ochre City’ and is an all-time-favorite destination for YSL enthusiasts across the globe.

painted in ‘Majorelle blue’

Nestled within Jardin Majorelle, a one-hectare (two-acre) botanical garden, the modernist villa is enveloped by exotic plants, jasmine and cacti. Contrasting with these lush green surroundings, the building takes on a bold electric blue hue which was later coined as ‘Majorelle blue’. 

As previously mentioned, the villa was designed in 1930s for the French painter Jacques Majorelle. After his death, the iconic residence was purchased by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé who famously refurbished its gardens. Buried in the verdant courtyards, the villa’s small footprint conceals its impressive true size: the main house is composed of several living rooms set around a patio while incorporating four en suite bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and terrace. A discreet adjacent pavilion houses two additional suites and a living room, with the swimming pool and shaded deck between. Intricate Moorish archways and open corridors connect the different areas, while many of the original features are preserved, including the terracotta pavers and the ancient zellige tiles.
