vo trong nghia drapes layer of greenery to balconies of atlas hotel vietnam

the atlas hotel is a green-filled holiday destination located in hoi an’s UNESCO heritage old town in vietnam. completed by vo trong nghia architects, the project combines the charm of the old town, the local tiled architecture and spatial quality to result in the five-storey hotel to reconnect guests with nature.

several internal courtyards define the organization of vo trong nghia’s scheme. the hotel features a linear layout that has been lifted to free the space underneath, transforming this into a sheltered network of inter-connected courtyards. due to the irregularity of the site each of the 48 guest rooms are shorter but wider than typical hotel rooms. this presented an opportunity for the architects to design the rooms with greater access  and immersion to greenery not only from the bedroom but also from the bathroom.

the brick and concrete façade has been constructed from locally-sourced sandstone. the exposed concrete slabs complement and give a sense of horizontality to the building. meanwhile planters and a layer of draping plants are arranged along balconies of the entire façade of the hotel. this not only provides solar shading but also allows cooler air to ventilate the spaces and minimize the use of air conditioning. greenery adds a welcoming aspect and softens the concrete and brick building. ultimately, the integration of nature promotes the rejuvenation of rapidly changing neighborhood in the old town of hoi an and in turn, will contribute to the improvement of the wider urban landscape.
