a feng shui family home in bangkok

Fusing ancient feng shui principles with contemporary design, ANONYM Studio unveils BK House in a residential neighborhood in Bangkok. The project decodes and readapts 2,000-years-old Chinese traditions for constructing to promote wellbeing, to adjust to today’s modern lifestyle and the tropical climate of Thailand. The home is conceived primarily as a luminous rectangular volume broken down into several geometric masses which mask the whole space and conceal an internal void that introduces a courtyard to enhance natural ventilation and lighting. Inside, the home maintains a typical feng shui ambience of serenity and abundance with a warm material palette of contrasted with pristine white  and modern finishes.

anonym studio fuses ancient and modern design principles

When first approached with the request to design a family home in accordance to strict feng shui principles, the Bangkok-based architects were hesitant due to the potential associated constraints. However, working collaboratively alongside the clients to explore various design solutions, a design concept that granted an architectural language honoring both tradition and modernity was conceived. The 1,200 sqm home fulfils its residents’ specific feng shui requirements by conceiving a square-shaped plan, positioning the front door to the south and placing a body of water in front of the building.

Drawing on traditional Chinese construction frameworks and to enhance the ambience of fortune and abundance, warm woods and light-toned materials were chosen alongside cooler white and light grey materials such as white marble, travertine, veneer and mosaic, and off-white paint. These combined alongside teak flooring, black metal, and darker stone create a warm and cozy ambience. Bespoke decorations, like the mosaic patterns in the inner court, the rayon veneer pattern in the prayer room, and the floor pattern in the master suite further work together to infuse a unique character to the home. Inside, ANONYM Studio has positioned a staircase which follows strict guidelines regarding number of steps, heights, length, and shape, while becoming a core sculptural piece in the space.
