a translucent bicycle pavilion

WAW architects designed a translucent bicycle pavilion clad in a metal mesh, allowing plenty of natural light and air to penetrate it. located on the site of the OCMW/city of halle, belgium, the project employs a simple layout, while metal is the protagonist of the structure. however, it applies a dynamic look, making it appear less massive.

the steel pavilion is placed on a concrete foundation, which contains retaining walls to absorb the existing slope. following the sloped terrain, a slightly slanted roof planted with greenery tops the structure. using the same design language, the rainwater drains, bicycle brackets, cable ducts, and electrical panels are also made of metal.WAW architects builds permeable bicycle pavilion in belgium wrapped in a mesh metal boxall images courtesy of tim van de velde

divided into two levels

the pavilion designed by WAW architects (see here) is positioned on a plot between the ‘social house’ and the residential care center ‘zonnig huis’ in halle. slanting and vertical I-profiles serving as columns support the concrete slabs above and below while a stainless steel wire net divides the space into two levels. this spatial separation is adapted cleverly to the existing height difference. both levels occupy different access, but thanks to the permeable design are conceived as one space.

the lower level functions as a public area for the safe and guarded parking of 14 bicycles or mobility scooters, accessible from the downstairs car park of ‘zonnig huis’. the upper level is designed for 44 bicycles, and is reachable from the upper car park of the ‘social house’. each area is outfitted with automatic doors, access control, lighting, camera system, and charging facilities for e-bikes.WAW architects builds permeable bicycle pavilion in belgium wrapped in a mesh metal box

once dark, soft permanent lighting, pleasant for the eyes, is provided to ensure safety. to better integrate into the garden part of the site, its extensive green roof has been chosen as a buffer for the rainwater. meanwhile, finding the right place for the construction was a challenge as the architects were requested to preserve the large existing trees.
