the canadian centre for architecture in montréal opened their latest exhibition on june 12. ‘will alsop: OCAD, an urban manifesto’ features the work of the acclaimed british architect will alsop. the exhibit specifically focuses on the architect’s prepatory work for one of his most high profile buildings: the sharp centre for design at the ontario college of art and design, located in toronto. the exhibit is organized by CCA curator of prints and drawings howard shubert and will be on show until october 5th in the gallery’s octagonal gallery.

completed in 2004, OCAD’s sharp centre for design was designed by alsop archietects in collaboration with robbie/young + wright. the design features a large black and white clad ‘table top’ structure that is supported by a set of colourful stilts. the unusual building stands in contrast to the surrounding toronto neighbourhood, floating nine stories above the ground. although the building is both loved and hated by locals, it has led the way toward an architectural renaissance in the city.

the exhibit displays the evolution of alsop’s design, while tracking his collaboration with local communities. over 50 different artefacts will be on show including a set of five paintings donated to the CCA by the architect (shown here). additionally, concept models, predatory drawings, archival documents and presentation materials will be on show.
