airbnb recruited an extensive team of collaborators — led by WOW atelier & civic entertainment group — to design the ‘airbnb haus’ for the 2016 sundance film festival, which took place last month. driven by a motto of ‘local characters live here’, the pop-up served as a relaxing place to celebrate storytelling, as well as participate and enjoy a range of activities.

WOW atelier’s welcoming, cozy interior served as a canvas for a broad grouping of installations, including everything from selfie beds to international live-stream conversations. guests were given the opportunity to transform stories and photos into personalized digital cards at adobe’s ‘pillow talk’. at the same time stories from around the world were being sent to and printed at london based artist brendan dawes‘ immersive ‘local murmurs’.

shared studio’s ‘portal’ project created a unique interactive experience, allowing guests to enter a private space and video chat with like-minded people from cuba, mexico, and iran. as the pop-up was hosted by airbnb, content from their expansive community was taken into account as well. ‘the cast of local characters’ took stories sourced from airbnb’s blog and transformed them into a work of art — thanks no doubt to their expert in-house design team.

made in part as a simple reprieve from the chaos of sundance, ‘airbnb haus’ was more than a place to waste a few minutes. each festival-goer and visitor had the chance to be touched by stories from around the world, an experience akin to the perspective-changing masterpieces of the festival itself.
