yamazaki kentaro design workshop has conceived the interiors for a japanese craft store in kuala lumpur. set within a large commercial complex, the retail scheme is defined by its gridded display cases, which serve as both the sales area and as a partition wall delineating the space. when viewed from outside the shop, the aluminum fixtures are illuminated, creating a sharp contrast between light and shadow.

architect kentaro yamazaki positioned a café towards the rear of the space, separated from the sales floor by the gridded partition. the screen creates a silhouette that resembles an illuminated japanese shoji door, giving the space a sense of depth. the rearmost wall, behind the café’s bar, is clad with a reflective tin finish.

as these elements come together, a uniquely japanese light and shadow aesthetic exemplified in kyoto’s katsura imperial villa is recreated within the context of a commercial facility,’ explains the design team. ‘the tin leaf wall covering, meticulously handmade by japanese craftsmen, imparts the high degree of japanese spatial expression to the local workers who applied it.’
