TOTO GALLERY·MA in Tokyo presents Yasutaka Yoshimura: MANGARCHITECTURE—Absence of an Architect, an exhibition on view until Sunday, March 23, 2025. Known for challenging conventional architectural authorship, Yasutaka Yoshimura examines how architecture can evolve when it steps beyond the architect’s direct control, bringing fresh perspectives to contemporary societal challenges.

The exhibition proposes a radical question: what happens when the architect’s authorship becomes absent? To investigate this, Yoshimura collaborates with seven manga artists to reinterpret seven of his projects as distinct narratives. The result is a creative fusion between the spatial world of architecture and the narrative-driven, visual medium of manga. By doing so, the exhibition transforms architecture into a malleable subject, untethered from its creator, to explore new possibilities of dwelling and living.

architecture meets the dynamic storytelling of manga

In this TOTO GALLERY·MA exhibition, Yoshimura explores the new dimensions that arise when architecture, freed from the architect’s hands, meets the dynamic storytelling of manga, an integral part of Japanese visual culture. Since the early stages of his career, the Japanese architect has focused on creating architectural solutions that bridge spontaneous human behaviors with complex social conditions. This inquiry forms the foundation of his exploration into Japan’s future, particularly as the nation faces depopulation. Key projects like Fukumasu Base (2016), Home2Go#001 (2019), and Takigahara Chicken Village (2021) exemplify this ethos. In Fukumasu Base, Yoshimura designed a childcare support facility by wrapping a wooden structure in a prefabricated tent warehouse, creating a flexible, open-plan environment where children can move freely. Meanwhile, Home2Go#001 envisions semi-movable property that offers freedom from traditional land ownership, and Takigahara Chicken Village imagines an animal welfare society where humans and animals coexist harmoniously.
