montreal-based practice YH2 has completed a coastal dwelling in caraquet — a village in new brunswick, canada. ‘les jumelles’, a name which translates from french as ‘the twins’, are two small sister constructions, joined together in order to create a single holiday residence that offers sweeping views across the adjacent bay. situated along the acadian peninsula, the scheme forms a part of the town’s urban environment, positioned a couple of hundred meters from the village’s church and less than 60 meters from its sandy beaches.

the building’s sober and stripped down appearance is influenced by the region’s vernacular architecture, reminiscent of a country barn. clad with metal sheeting, the house is located in a natural clearing surrounded by lush vegetation. largely fenestrated on its southern façade, the first of the two structures contains living accommodation, while its sister, open at its northern end, contains the bedrooms and the garage.

the two parallel volumes are connected via a glazed passage, which serves as an office space offering panoramic sea views. its careful placement between the twin structures ensures just the right amount of privacy, while simultaneously defining a sunbathed courtyard that remains protected from the region’s strong winds. internally, staggered floor heights respond to the undulating topography, with timber detailing continued throughout.
