before working on this project in the jiangxi province of china, chief designer and creative director of yiduan shanghai interior design xu xujun was thinking about the future development of the restaurant. he wanted to design an innovative space which would blend nature into a hospitality environment.

‘for a long time, there was no breakthrough in the field of restaurant design or even in the whole design industry’, comments yiduan shanghai interior design‘s team. ‘no innovation could be found in designs of different industries. most of the restaurants are just about shaping or the arrangement of furniture, which is neither attractive nor have features that could touch people’s heart. designers have the responsibility and should play a leading role in improving the quality of future life and living environment’.

mr. xu applied natural bamboo to the dining space creatively, thus combining healthy food with environment. upon entering into the space, visitors  encounter a magical ‘bamboo forest’ and can experience a sense of pease and tranquility. because of the fact that the original purpose of the building was an office, tiles are used on the exterior facade from the 1st floor to the 4th floor to connect the whole building aesthetically.

the whole building consists of 4 floors — the 1st floor contains the reception lobby and kitchen, the 2nd floor is the banquet hall, the 3rd floor has private rooms, and the 4th and 5th floor are for social catering. using the mezzanine above the 4th floor, the designer converted the 4th and 5th floors into an independent social dining area.

bamboo is an element that is applied across the whole building and connects every floor. two staircases are designed between the 4th and 5th floor, which makes the space coherent vertically and allows more interaction. materials used are simple and natural, such as tiles, phyllostachys praecox, straw walls, and plain cement.

the whole space is interpreted on an eco-friendly concept. it presents a sense of transparency and is private but not depressed, which is very different from traditional space division. a bamboo-basket-shaped dining area is the highlight of the design. the staircases and dining areas are all hidden in the bamboo baskets as if the whole restaurant was hidden in a bamboo forest. the baskets let light in, making the restaurant more graceful, natural and simple, thus creating a space which returns to purity and simplicity.
