armadillo complex weaves into its natural environment

Zozaya Arquitectos’ Armadillo is a residential complex in Zihuatanejo, Mexico, that blends bold design with sustainability to create intimate spaces surrounded by nature. Inspired by its namesake, a creature emblematic of the region, the project translates its essence into a spatial design characterized by intertwining walls and walkways that foster privacy, rhythm, and movement.

Verdant, engulfed in earthen hues, and shaped from locally sourced materials, the construction ensures harmony between architecture and context. These materials, enhancing durability and lending a tactile quality while minimizing environmental impact, are complemented by intricate details such as river stone carpets and bamboo and parota carpentry, curating a distinct, rustic aesthetic.

zozaya arquitectos adopts sustainability palette

The design philosophy behind Armadillo is rooted in creating a seamless integration between the built and natural environments. Zozaya Arquitectos leverages the complex topography of the terrain, with pathways and accesses that wind through the site, creating intimate pockets that connect residents with their surroundings. Each apartment further features suspended gardens on terraces that overlook the mountains and sea beyond, encouraging the integration of greenery into the living spaces.

Prioritizing environmental sustainability and efficiency, the architects employs green building practices and locally sourced materials. The finishes, including paints that mimic the effects of rust, embrace the passage of time. The complex’s design also emphasizes flexibility, enabling residents to adjust their outdoor spaces to meet their privacy needs and preferences for a living experience that is both personalized and in tune with the shifting natural environment.
