ai weiwei's beijing studio is turned to dust by chinese authorities

chinese contemporary artist ai weiwei, who has been living in berlin since 2015 after enormous frictions with chinese government and his arrest for almost a month, has just lost his beijing studio to an unexpected demolition of the east german style socialist factory building. when the process started, lots of artist’s works were still in the building — weiwei bid farewell to them and his office with multiple videos on his instagram page.

according to ai weiwei’s assistants, the lease of the building expired last year — the team was asked to leave the studio within days, but there was no precaution of an immediate demolition. as the artist has recorded every step of it, his followers are able to trace the process from the first day until this morning, when weiwei left the site full of ruins.
