‘EMBROIDERED ORDINARINESS’ by Alicja (Alice) Kozlowska

Textile artist Alicja (Alice) Kozlowska introduces her latest embroidered felt artwork, this time recreating popular consumer goods found in supermarkets. From Coca-Cola cans to Cheetos bags and Heineken beer bottles, her colorful and hyper-realistic 3D sculptures were displayed discreetly on store shelves in different countries to gauge grocery shoppers’ reactions once they found the piece. ‘My goal is to surprise and involve the viewer, and usually, their reactions are very positive,’ writes the artist.

In her works, Alicja Kozlowska uses a needle to embroider, like a brush. She combines various materials from labels, newspapers, and foils to felt and fabric. ‘I would like to popularize and change the perception of fabric, which can also become a work of art. Performances I create are forcing viewers to think more deeply about the hidden problem in my message.’

Her interest in art quilt technique and embroidery began in 2017, creating 3D embroidered felt sculptures of everyday objects to provide an opportunity to rethink these items taken for granted. She mainly focuses on consumerism and rendering them in a Pop Art aesthetic.
