british-born, LA-based designer andrew byrom has been commissioned by azusa pacific university to create a typographic installation at its california campus. on the façade of a relatively unused space, byrom has positioned the phrase ‘wisdom is supreme’ facing away from the primary academic buildings, but directly at the city’s new metro gold line. as trains slowly pull into, or away from, the recently-constructed azusa downtown station, passengers can view the dynamic, typographic design at optimum eye-level.

the vibrant, 100-foot-wide graphic statement has been applied to the exterior of the campus building with white diagonal stripes cutting through it. a fence-like structure positioned six feet away from the letterforms features a sequence of corresponding red bands. as passengers view the installation from the moving train, the overlapping graphics create an optical moiré effect that sees the typographic forms visually pulsate and shimmer.
