the bass museum of art in miami presents an exhibition which probes american architect peter marino‘s multifaceted relationship with art. opening december 4, 2014 during art basel miami beach, ‘one way: peter marino’ highlights the leather-clad creative’s cross-disciplinary practice, for which he has been celebrated over the past four decades. marino presents this expansive catalog of work intersecting art, fashion and architectural design through may 3, 2015.
curated by jérôme sans, the exhibition explores the interplay between marino’s iconic architectural designs, his personal collection of contemporary art and his series of cast-bronze boxes. true to the architect’s practice of creating bespoke installations, the showcase comprises a selection of commissioned work by artists gregor hildebrandt, guy limone, farhad moshiri, jean-michel othoniel and erwin wurm.

the exhibit begins with hildebrandt’s ‘orphische schatten’ (orphic shadows), a site-specific installation that adopts hundreds of videotape strips accumulated from copies of jean cocteau’s classic film ‘orphée’, and places them onto the surface of the walls. the work continues within the museum rooms, plunging the viewer into a shimmering darkness reminiscent of the underworld — an extention of cocteau’s poetic play with imagery of mirrors and passageways. the corridors of tape guide visitors through a selection of works from marino’s personal collection of contemporary art, including pieces by loris gréaud, keith haring, richard serra, rudolf stingel and andy warhol. additionally, the exhibition features sections dedicated to pop art, iconic portraiture and photography, as well as marino’s recently-designed series of cast-bronze boxes presented within leather-clad walls.

‘one way: peter marino’ comes to a conclusion with the recreation of christoph willibald gluck’s ‘opera orfeo ed euridice’. this work — a creative collaboration between marino, his wife jane trapnell, michal rovner, dior and francesco clemente — recreates the opera originally staged in marino’s new york home in 2013 with sets designed by marino himself. these types of artistic partnerships and commissioned performances exemplify marino’s continued drive to work with the most talented individuals in the visual and performing arts.

skulls are a highly important symbol within art and art history, often appearing as ‘momento moro’, reminders of the constant presence and inevitability of death. they also hold resonance for marino, who often designs and wears jewellery depicting the motif. the skulls room engages the theme of mortality with beauty, poignance and even whimsy, bringing the exhibition to its inevitable conclusion.
