entitled ‘creatures of color,’ the latest campaign from billabong is shot entirely in infrared. a modified camera transforms the lush setting into a surreal, fictional land. professional surfers — hawaiian-born alessa quizon and australian-born felicity palmateer and laura enever — are depicted as surfing creatures living within their vibrant, abstract world. the billabong ‘creatures of color’ photo series and short video follows a dream-like journey shot as if this world is being uncovered for the first time.

born along the gold coast of australia in 1973, billabong continues to inspire youth through progressive surf culture. the artistic campaign ‘creatures of color’ takes influence from the fall 2019 product collection color palette to create a surreal and otherworldly atmosphere. this collection is shown to emerge, expressive of abstract palm leaf prints and a palette of bright pinks, spiced hues of rum & cacao, and deep lagoon greens — all cast in jungle shadows. instances of full, colliding colors make a statement, while subdued monochromatic moments offer a modern look.

billabong women’s swimwear collection is spirited and playful, and aims to inspire women who share the deep connection with the ocean and beach lifestyle. the team comments: ‘being immersed in surfing can sometimes feel as if you are stepping into a portal to a different planet where life becomes more colorful. the freedom, the smell, the excitement, you become one with your surroundings. a place where you can roam free and surf empty waves.‘

the billabong ‘creatures of color’ series was shot in infrared — a photographic technique which makes use of a lens that is sensitive to wavelengths imperceptible by the human eye. the technique captures the tropical landscapes with surreal reactions to elements with chlorophyll, such as grass, leaves, and trees.
