chelpa ferro was created in 1995 by the artists jorge barrão, luiz zerbini and sergio mekler.
the name is taken from an archaic brazilian slang term for ‘old money’.
the works of chelpa ferro http://chelpaferro.com.br are oddly silent, loath to articulate the political leanings and
critical positions of their authors. would-be icons of desire and consumption, television sets and sports cars,
are physically destroyed or dismantled to generate sound in chelpa ferro’s performances and installations
without any noticeable problematisation of their double-life as icons.
they just announced their upcoming exhibition at the galeria vermelho
in são paulo, brazil, in june 2008.

‘on-off poltergeist’ exhibition and performance at the mezkalito gallery, in collaboration with students on
the master’s programmes in curatorial studies at the royal college of art in london, june-july 2007.
the installation comprised seven television monitors connected to individual aerials broadcasting live programmes.
the sound is rhythmically destructured through seven timers connected to the television speakers that have been
extracted, separated and fixed to the wall.

jungle jam‘ a symphony of polythene bags at fact gallery
liverpool, december 2006 – january 2007

unbranded plastic bags, are ranged at equidistance and similar height around all walls. there is a pleasing minimalist visual aesthetic. bags twist and rustle, hit the wall with a quick thud and continue their furious crackling perambulation against a soft background hum of whirring motors. programmed by computer in group sequences on a ten minute loop, each motor is set to turn at slightly varied speeds, allowing for unexpected texture. via life art
