as part of the ‘metro poles, art in action’ series, the jamaica center for arts & learning commissioned a new piece by artist john powers. based in brooklyn, john powers works mainly in sculpture and installation. in ‘captain america’ powers presents a dual installation featuring pieces titled ‘empire’ and ‘captain america’. ‘empire’ is a large hanging sphere that is made from styrofoam covered in anodized aluminium. the form appears to be made up of many smaller forms, perhaps buildings or found objects. the show’s namesake installation is made up of several cubes within cubes. each form is all white and resembles an optical illusion similar to the work of m.c. escher. the cubes are arranged in a circle forming a star in their negative space and the facing undersides are all painted a soft and dark red.
