‘catherine opie: american photographer’ is a mid-career survey of about 200 works of the artist’s photographs. practicing since the early 1990s, catherine opie has explored and produced a body of work which cover notions of communal, sexual and cultural identity. from her early portraits which deal with queer subculture to her landscapes of urban communities, opie’s photographs range in contrast from those in saturated color as well as in rich tones of black and white. the show includes work from her series portraits(1993), mini-malls(1997-98), icehouses(2001) and surfers(2003).
