with the festive season nearing, the flurry of celebration is palpable and designboom is receiving work from all over world honoring the spirit of the holiday. inge vanluyd an stefan vanbergen from belgian company mooz have sent designboom images of their ‘taste tree’ adorning hasselt’s main square in belgium. the 9 metre-high sculpture is made up of about 5,000 items of crockery donated by the local residents of the city – not only providing material for the structure, but also created as an opportunity to bring the inhabitants of town together through the language of creativity.

the duo discuss their design:

‘at home we all have odd plates and cups which just don’t go with anything and as a consequence never find their way out of the cupboard. we noticed that friends and family also had ‘spare’ plates hanging around the house.this was enough to get us thinking about a creative destination for these everyday objects. that’s how we ended up with a porcelain christmas tree in the city of hasselt (belgium) ‘the capital of taste’. we decorated the tree with objects which would otherwise have remained invisible’.

the design will be available to see till the 6th of january 2013 in hasselt’s main square in belgium.
